This is certainly not what I expected. Definately a radical re-imagining (though not in the same reverential way that LanternLad reimagined the GL Corp)--- almost to the point of why even use the Billy Batson character? Seeing the Batsons in such straits was distressing--- and why change their names from C.C. and Marilyn to David and Laura, btw? Given this new, more modern origin, I think I personally would have preferred a new alter-ego for Captain Marvel. Not to be negative, this issue straddled the line between drama and melodrama (particularly the end), but I will reserve final judgement until I read the next installment. On a more positive note, I thought there was some very nice use of foreshadowing--- something's coming to give Cap a handful! And I think that changing the wizard into Lady Shazam could grow on me (though if not handled right, change for change's sake is well, boring).

while his parents are drastically different (or, I guess, I don't really know, not really up on Cap Marvel) Billy is pretty much unchanged. he is really the big boy scott (a modern one, though), and even with the hard life he was given, he is someone with eternal optimism and a real belief in heroism. but....how is this origin so drastically different from his DCU origin anyways? I'm really asking here, because from what I've heard of his post crisis origin is that he was an orphan? How'd he become an orphan in regular DCU?

this is why he probably didnt want to join the board... There's nothing wrong with honest criticism, as long as it's not mean-spirited. I didn't love this. In fact, as a fan of Captain Marvel, I kinda resent it. However, I think it's still too early to pass judgement on it. We only have a very short issue 1 to go on so far, and I'm willing to give this take on Cap the benefit of the doubt (after all, look what LanternLad is pulling off in GL Corp). To answer Dan's question regarding Billy's parents: their names were C.C. and Marilyn Batson, archaeologists (lots of those in the DCU, huh?) who were betrayed and murdered by their partner, a crimina named Theo Adams, who was a descendant of Black Adam (and a kind-of reincarnation of him, as well--- but that's complicated). Billy then went off to live with his wicked Uncle Ebenezer in Fawcett City, where he was sought out by the wizard Shazam to take up the mantle of Captain Marvel.

well, david, you really should wait to judge the story until it's finished. while it changed the parents, i do think it serves the story a bit. it's different from what you are familiar with, but it does serve a purpose, to show how billy truly is worthy of the power. also...issue 2 is getting posted in two weeks, then issue 3 either two or 3 weeks after....so you'll get the complete story pretty soon. and even the gender change of shazam does serve a small purpose. i honestly don't feel that this is change for change's sake...

I haven't judged it, I've just expressed how I feel about it. Also, there is a continuity problem with the wizard being "Lady Shazam" (it conflicts with Hawkman 0, where he's referred to as the "Wizard Shazam")--- but Lantern Lad has a neat fix for it. I'll let him tell you.

Other than what has happened to Mary (whom I hope is not TRULY dead, since I do want a "Mary Marvel"), I like what you have. Keep up the good work!
