It was a decent read. Just like other's I'm a little skeptical to the major changes in the family life because I feel that's what gave him his boundless optimism from what I understand about him. Didn't he even shape the look of CM after his father? Kinda hard to do that when your father is a drunk that hits his wife. I'll still give it a chance though. Lookin forward to the biweekly thing. I was thinkin of Hawkman too, but if they have a reason for this seeming continuity error than I'm all for it.

issue 2 is now posted.
The Power of Shazam continues as Billy, having run away from his foster home finds himself in a weird cave, standing before the beautiful Lady Shazam. He's just a kid, how could he possibly be expected to responsibly weild the power that he is granted when he becomes Captain Marvel?

I'm liking this. I mean sure it is kinda different from the DC origin but it fits. His life was full of harsh realities: death and violence, so that gives him a reason to fight for justice. But he took what his mother taught him and kept that with him. That's where his boundless optimism still holds true. My biggest problem is the last example that Lady Shazam uses is of Billy helping the boy and then running away "to find his place." The helping of the boy was that showing of his optimism but him leaving kinda felt more like a fault. It's explained as him feeling as though he had a better future, but it still felt like he was running away.

well...the writer of that story isn't on this site so i'll try to answer this...i believe the writer was probably trying to have Billy be called to his destiny possibly....but, you gotta think that Billy is a kid...he isn't perfect. He will make mistakes, so this could also be just one of those rare moments when Billy does act like a normal kid

I am enjoying this arc... I have the benefit of having read it in it's entirety over 2 months ago, and I have no love or pre-conceived notions regarding the Captain Marvel character. So this is the first real origin I'm ever reading for the character.

But for those who have read previous Marvel origins/ stories...
this isn't as strong a piece of work it could be...

Cool, I understand that... but aside from that, wiping away all knowledge of anything CM... it's a decent story.

Okay, I dunno, I like it but I don't like it... if that makes sense. It seems like there's a lot of change for change's sake. The reasons he "deserves the power" are a little flaky at best. I'm sure thousands of other kids in America alone deserved it just as much as he did if that's the best Lady Shazam could do.
Maybe the writter thought he was updating it to make it a little more relevant but still... bah...

Maybe he was closest... and a red haired, equally 'deserving' character will appear, and become some arch enemy, or later his sucessor. Guy something.
I dunno...
